An open letter to Stephen Barclay MP

Events are moving rapidly right now, from the impromptu protests at US airports against Trump’s #MuslimBan Executive Order, to the promotion of Steve Bannon to the National Security Council over the Joint Chiefs. A petition of the British parliament calling for the cancellation of the planned state visit by Trump has reached over 420,000 signatories in a matter of hours. People pressure even pushed a reluctant Theresa May into making a statement overnight where the PM said she didn’t agree with the 90-day ban on Muslims from entering the US.

There’s a fantastic website called WriteToThem.com, which enables you to email your local politicians, including constituency MP. This afternoon, I’ve sent the following email to my MP, Stephen Barclay:

Dear Stephen Barclay,

I hope you are well. The past few days have been nothing short of terrifying. The Prime Minister has been seen to show a distinct lack of courage against an increasingly dangerous US President, and has in fact allied herself – and the UK by extension – with him.

Her reticence to say that his ban on Muslims entering the United States was unethical underlined this, especially as her belated statement came late last night after public pressure on this side of the Atlantic, and protests at several US airports.

We are at a dangerous point in time, one where our actions as a country and as individuals will be judged by future generations. The UK must stand up to this despot-in-development before it is too late.

As a pro-Brexit politician, you wanted the UK to take back control. Surely this did not mean become aligned with an increasingly fascist regime in the US. To that end, I am asking you to ensure the UK takes control and stands up to the Trump administration.

Yours sincerely,

Jon Wilcox
